First Day Pre-Sunrise Hike to King’s Chair

Oak Mountain State Park

Be the first to watch the sun rise on the first day of 2019 on what’s considered one of the most scenic places in Birmingham. Participants should meet at the North Trail Head at 5 a.m. After a quick introduction, OMSP’s Naturalist will lead the advanced-level hike at 5:20 a.m. The first part of the trek is in the dark, so bring a headlamp or flashlight.

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Alabama

Come on in, the water’s … cold! Show your support for the 15,000 athletes of Special Olympics Alabama by taking the Pelham Polar Plunge. Come dressed in costume for a chance to win bragging rights and prizes. Robbie Lewis from Hoop for Fitness will visit the library’s Teen Homeschool Hangout to share how she turned her passion for nutrition and hooping into meaningful careers. Anyone in sixth-12th grade is welcome to attend.

ACT Prep Camp

University of Montevallo

Practice makes perfect, right? This camp is designed to equip high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with test-taking strategies for the ACT. The cost is $110 and includes lunch and a snack, a copy of the official ACT Test Prep book, a math review card and other goodies. The camp covers all ACT test subjects with in-class practice testing.
