There’s no better place to be than Shelby County on a warm spring day. Consider this your guide to the festivals, Easter egg hunts, golf tournaments and community events taking place in April.

1. INVERNESS VS. CANCER: Inverness Country Club will hold the inaugural Inverness vs. Cancer golf tournament in honor of longtime golf pro Dave Ragan Jr. on April 1 with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. at Inverness Country Club. Entry fee is $150 per golfer, with lunch at 11 a.m. and an awards presentation (with light hors d’oeuvres) to conclude the tournament. Hole sponsorships are $250 per hole. There will be special prizes on all Par 3 holes, and Hole 6 will be a Money Hole. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society in honor of Ragan. 2. LIBRARY BOOK AND BAKE SALE: The Friends of Albert L. Scott Library Semi-annual Book and Bake Sale will be held Friday, April 5, 5-7 p.m. (Friends only); Saturday, April 6, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Sunday, April 7, 1-3 p.m. The sale will be in the Community Room at the library, 100 9th St. NW in Alabaster. Proceeds help the library with extras to enhance annual programming, especially children’s events.

3. SOUTH CITY THEATRE PRESENTS: South City Theatre presents the classic comedy “Harvey” by Mary Chase, and directed by Pat Yates, on April 5, 6 and 11-13 at 7:30 p.m., and April 7 and 14 at 2 p.m.

4. EASTER EGG HUNT SPRING MARKET: Families can enjoy a day of Easter egg hunts (bring your own basket), hay rides, WZZK music, pony rides, food trucks, shopping, inflatables, a rock wall and more at Oak Mountain State Park on Saturday, April 6. The fun starts at 9 a.m. Regular admission fees apply.

5. MT LAUREL SPRING FESTIVAL: Green grass and blooming flowers are signs of spring’s return. What’s another sign for Shelby County residents? Mt Laurel’s annual spring festival on Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Mt Laurel Town Center. It’s an opportunity to shop a vibrant street fair, savor dishes from the best local food trucks, listen to live music and enjoy a day strolling the idyllic streets of one of Birmingham’s best neighborhoods.

6. DAY OUT WITH THOMAS: Thomas the Tank Engine invites little engineers to go full steam ahead for a day of engaging activities and adventures at Day Out With Thomas: The Steam Team Tour 2019 at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera on March 29-31 and April 6-7 from 9:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tickets for Day Out With Thomas: The Steam Team Tour 2019 are on sale now and available by calling Ticketweb toll-free at 866-468-7630 or by visiting Dayoutwiththomas.com. Ticket prices are $22 plus tax for ages 2 and up.

7. FIRE AT THE FOOTHILLS: The Fire at the Foothills BBQ and Chili Cook-off will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at Chelsea City Hall. The event will include live music, barbecue and chili tastings and a kids play area, with proceeds benefitting Chelsea Kiwanis and Chelsea Fire & Rescue.

8. BALL FUNDRAISER: Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School will hold its 18th annual Building a Lasting Legacy—the PTO’s main fundraising event—on Saturday, April 6. Tickets to the event are still available, as are opportunities for corporate and family sponsorships. Online bidding also is open on dozens of auction items and can be found at OLVBall.com. All proceeds from the event go to the school. 9. AWF MOMS’ NIGHT OUT: The Angel Warriors Foundation’s Moms’ Night Out will be held April 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Corbin Farms Winery in Calera. 10. 2019 WARRIOR CHALLENGE: The 2019 Warrior Challenge will feature a 5K and 1-mile obstacle fun run on Saturday, April 13 at the University of Montevallo Disc Golf Course, located near the McChesney Student Activity Center. The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 1-mile obstacle fun run at 10 a.m. Other offerings include music, kids’ activities and refreshments. The event benefits The Arc of Shelby County.
