You might not be among those who take a plunge into frigid waters on a Saturday morning, but there are still plenty of ways to kick off the new year. Here’s a list of local events you can add to your calendar.

•First Day Hike

January 1 // Oak Mountain State Park

Start the new year off with a pre-sunrise hike to King’s Chair at Oak Mountain State Park. It’s an early hike, but you can be among the first to watch the sun rise on the first day of 2020. Meet at the North Trailhead at 5:30 a.m., and if weather isn’t suitable, the group will move the hike to later in the day. All ages are welcome, but this is considered a more advanced hike for some.

•Sprue, Sprout, Re-Route Gallery Exhibit

Through January 10 // Shelby County Arts Center

Through drawing, sculpture and installation, artists Daisie Hoitsma and Jason Tanner Young address the fragmentation of the everyday, and the systems and routines that connect and sustain. Their exhibit features multiple materials, including copper and aluminum Young has collected and melted to produce a bronze alloy. View the exhibit in person at the Shelby County Arts Center in Columbiana.

•A Tribute to Patsy Cline Featuring The Sassy Brown Band

January 18 // Shelby County Arts Center

Enjoy an evening of classic country music as innovated by the one and only Patsy Cline … and performed by the Sassy Brown Band featuring Lauren Brown on vocals and Glen Butts on guitar, leading a band of seasoned musicians. Americana duo The Wallens will open the show. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show will start at 7:30 p.m.

•Pelham Polar Plunge

January 18 // Oak Mountain State Park

Take the plunge into icy waters this winter to help provide more than 15,000 Special Olympics Alabama athletes with an opportunity to participate in sports training and competition programs that help them live longer, happier, healthier lives. Come dressed in a costume for a chance to win bragging rights and cool prizes. Visit pelhampd.com/event-details/pelham-polar-plunge for more details and to register. The plunge will commence at 9 a.m.
